Birthdays! This past week we have been invited to Pat's Place for two different children's birthday parties. These are some of our 'grandparenting' opportunities. One tradition they have is towards the end of the party, the lights in the room are turned out, the candles on the cake are lit, and everyone joins in singing "Happy Birthday" in English, then in Spanish, and a third time they sing a Christian version! Let me take a moment to share a little about the two parties we attended.
One was for Sarya, a beautiful little girl who turned 9 years old. She is one of 4 children, very sociable, extremely helpful, does well in school, loves to sing & dance, and enjoys being "girlie"! Her party was most important to her and she arrived all dressed up in a white taffeta (hand-me-down) dress looking much older than her years. Shortly after everyone greeted her with hugs and kisses, she disappeared, and returned in another outfit, this time a black velvet, long-sleeved dress once worn by some unknown young girl. The evening's activities were parlor games, snacks, and a home-baked chocolate cake. Photos of the birthday girl, and all the party goers, completed the festivities.
The second party was for Pierro, a young boy turning 6 years old. He is one of 3 children, with a grin from ear to ear most of the time, and big beautiful brown eyes which pierce through your heart when you see him! Pierro and one of the other boys, Jhonathan, are best buddies. They play well together and are about 6 months apart in age. Pierro was a little shy with all the attention given to him, and enjoyed watching the older children play the games at his party more than participating himself! However, the chips, candy treats, bubble gum, and birthday cake made his day special!
Thinking about these birthday parties, we pray that the children will soon learn what it is to have a second birthday to celebrate, that they will come to understand the love of the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, and that they will know Him personally.
